‘Sindsvijfentwintig jaar werk ik als componist regelmatig met violist Kees Hilhorst samen. Uit deze samenwerking zijn reeds verscheiden composities van mijn hand ontstaan, stukken die hij met veel enthousiasme heeft helpen vormgeven en die hij, solo of met andere musici, met ditzelfde enthousiasme heeft uitgevoerd, niet alleen in Nederland, maar ook in andere landen, waaronder onder meer Duitsland en Denemarken.
Kees’ inzet, zijn solistische kwaliteit, en zijn niet aflatende kritische kijk, én als instrumentalist én als uitvoerder van hedendaags repertoire, zijn onontbeerlijk voor mij geweest bij de totstandkoming van de diverse composities. Mede door deze eigenschappen is een van mijn stukken recentelijk gehonoreerd met een opdracht van het Fonds voor de Scheppende toonkunst.
Maar niet alleen voor mijn werk, ook voor dat van andere componisten is hij een grote stimulator geweest. Dit is voor de hedendaagse componist en voor de hedendaagse muziekpraktijk van onschatbare waarde.

‘I have recently returned to Edinburgh after spending a year as composer-in-residence at Victoria University of Wellington (New Zealand). In January Kees Hilhorst came to New Zealand and gave three very fine recitals of challenging solo violin music, including some pieces by New Zealand composers. His dedication and commitment to the music was evident and his playing of the highest quality. Everyone who attended these recitals was impressed and moved by his performance. Such advocacy and involvement is crucial in bringing music to life. It allows us to discover more about ourselves, and about the world around us. I think it is important that he be given every encouragement in this enterprising undertaking.
It is not so often that music from New Zealand is heard in Europe and Kees' concerts will provide a good opportunity to hear some of the chamber music.
